Trying Peking Opera Makeup

Although I don’t wear makeup regularly I enjoy wearing it for special occasions such as parties and stage performances. In particular, I love colourful and bold looks, similar to what drag queens wear. In fact, in 2019 I tried drag makeup inspired by the drag queen Kim Chi (see below).

For ages I’ve wanted to try Peking (aka Beijing) Opera makeup as it’s very colourful and bold. So last week I bought some face paints and watched some makeup tutorials.

I choose to copy the makeup design of the female character Dan as it’s the easiest out of all the Peking Opera characters. Dan’s makeup design only uses three colours; white, red and black. The biggest challenge I encountered was the face paints melting and not having white or red face powder to combat said melting. Putting on the makeup took about one hour but I managed to cut the video footage down to 8 minutes so that you can see the whole process.
